Alex won Sprott Shaw Scholastic Open (Grade 1)

In K-2 section the first grade one with 3 points out of 5 was Alex. With this result his rating jump from 827 from 814. Congratulation Alex!

This is the final position from a real game played last week in Holland between GM Short (white) and GM Cheparinov. GM is short for "Grand Master" - the highest title a chess player can achieve!

Nigel Short (born June 1, 1965 in Leigh, Lancashire) is often regarded as the strongest British chess player of the 20th century. If you want you can find out more about him here

Ivan Cheparinov (born November 26, 1986 in Asenovgrad, Bulgaria) is a Bulgarian chess player, who won the Bulgarian Chess Championship in 2005. If you want you can find out more about him here

.... Remember the game I showed you last week? The one between the genius player call Paul Morphy (with black pieces) and someone called John Schulten. After 17 moves white moved Kg1 and the position was this.

As a homework I would like you to write down the rest of the moves till black checkmate the white king. All are "forced moves", that means the white does not have choices for his moves, he is forced to make a particular move.
One more interesting detail about this game, Paul play this game "blind", that means he did not look at the board during the game, his opponent speak out his moves, example: Move 17: King from f1 to g1 and Paul reply also announcing his moves: Move 17: Knight d4 to f3 - check! (Ooops I give out white first move)

Born in Hungary, she now lives in Texas together with her 2 sons (Tom born March 6, 1999 and Leeam born November 22, 2000) )and her husband. She was the Women's World Chess Champion from 1996 until 1999. She ran the Polgar Chess Center and the Susan Polgar Foundation, which gives chess training to children, especially girls.
In January 1991, Polgar became the first woman to earn the Grandmaster title in the conventional way — that is, by achieving three GM norms and a rating over 2500.

2007 North American Youth Chess Championship

North American Youth Chess Championships (October 5-7, 2007)

The last games of this tournament finished yesterday, resulting in a gold medal for Canada! Alexandra Botez of Port Moody led from start to finish and won the Girls' U12 Section with an undefeated 6.0/7 score. This victory qualifies her for the 2008 Pan-American Championship and according to the official website she also receives the title of Woman Candidate Master (FIDE stipulates that title events cannot have more than two rounds a day yet the tournament had three on Saturday, so I'm not quite sure how that works). There were several other strong Canadian performances which just missed winning a medal: Jonah Lee (U8) lost in the third and fourth rounds but won his remaining games to score 5.0/7 - this tied him for second, but after tiebreaks he placed fourth. Jacob Jensen (U10) played on board one in the last round, but a rook versus knight and two pawns material imbalance gradually got away from him for a heartbreaking loss, leaving him tied for third with 5.0/7 but outside the medals on tiebreak. The other B.C. players on the team were Tanraj Sohal and Stefan Trandafir; in fact, all the Canadian players were from B.C. with the sole exception of Justin McDonald of Ontario, who was there with his father, CFC Junior Coordinator Patrick McDonald. The tournament was held in Aguascalientes in Central Mexico, roughly the same longitude as Estevan, Saskatchewan. One hundred and eighty-two players took part, six from Canada, eleven from the United States, the rest from Mexico. This was only the second time the tournament has been held, the first was in Boca Raton, Florida in 2004.[...]

2007 BC Girls Open Championship

Silver Knights Chess Club together with BC Chess Federation and sponsored by Sprott-Show Community College are inviting all the girls chess players to be part of 2007 BC Girls Open Championship.
